From zero to zucchini. A garden update.
Zucchini in Abundance
The garden has been doing OK.
The few strawberries we got to eat early in the season were very good but most went to the bunnies despite our dogs’ best efforts.
There was a bit of a lull but now vegetables are coming in. We’ve had several tomatoes and the zucchini are producing well. Maybe too well.
There always seems to come a point when you can’t give zucchini away fast enough. Same for cucumbers.
The apple tree, for once, has a good amount of fruit on it. May be able to get a good harvest later this summer.
The wild plums have been exceptionally productive also.
Last year was lean for persimmons so I’m excited/hopeful to see what we get this year.
The Weather
Not sure what’s going on with the weather here. Had weeks and weeks of hot, dry weather which opened up wide cracks in the lawn as well as made the grass crunchy.
Now, for the past few weeks, there haven’t been many days in a row without rain. It’s unusual.
Other Efforts
I haven’t had time to scythe off any hay, but did get a chance to finally transplant a brown Turkey fig that has been limping along in a pot. The fig has really done well since the move. It had figs last year but none this year. I think the stress of the temperature changes discouraged it.
I’m looking at planting some late summer items for fall harvest. Mainly, lettuce, some garlic, parsnips and the like. We will see how that goes.
Hasn’t been a terribly productive year as we’ve been so busy with work but we have enjoyed some of the yield, such as it is.
Where else can I spend an excessive amount of time and resources on a vegetable I can buy at the store for $1.68?
