Overview of the Confraternity of the Rosary
The Dominican Order oversees the spiritual association known as the Confraternity of the Rosary. It has an interesting history dating back to the 15th century. The Dominican Order founded it in response to a vision of Saint Dominic, who saw the Blessed Virgin Mary giving him a Rosary and urging him to spread devotion to it. The Confraternity quickly spread throughout Europe and became an important part of Catholic spiritual life. In the centuries that followed, the Confraternity continued to grow and develop, with many popes and saints promoting its mission of promoting the Rosary and its spiritual benefits. Today, the Confraternity of the Rosary remains a vibrant and active organization, dedicated to promoting devotion to the Rosary and helping Catholics deepen their faith and grow in holiness.
Different Provinces of the Dominican order throughout the world administer the Confraternity of the Rosary. In the United States, the Eastern Dominican Province (Province of St. Joseph) has its Confraternity based in Columbus, Ohio. The Rosary Confraternity of the Western Dominican Province (Province of the Holy Name of Jesus) is based in Portland, Oregon at their Rosary Center. The Rosary Confraternity is probably the largest organization of this type within the Catholic Church. Source:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Confraternity_of_the_Rosary
There’s quite a bit more information that is easily found via a web search so I won’t bore you with reciting something you can find on your own. However, I do want to provide an overview of the benefits of joining and how you can obtain membership.
Benefits of Enrollment
The Confraternity of the Rosary is an organization of Catholic faithful who commit themselves to pray the Rosary regularly. Joining this confraternity has numerous benefits, including spiritual growth and deeper devotion to Mary, the Mother of God. Members of the confraternity unite in prayer, and their collective prayers can be powerful tools for personal and communal transformation. Regularly praying the Rosary can also lead to a more contemplative and meditative approach to prayer, helping individuals to deepen their relationship with God. Additionally, members of the Confraternity receive spiritual benefits, including plenary indulgences, which can help to purify their souls and increase their chances of entering into eternal life.
Of all of the above items, I think the biggest appeal and benefit is you are joining a collective of faithful who regularly pray the Rosary with a united intention for each other. That is an amazing thing! You join in with the prayers of thousands of members across the globe – even after death. Additionally:
- Appeal to the protection of the Mother of God
- A share in the prayers, Masses and apostolic works of the entire Order of Preachers
- The intercession of the entire heavenly court
- Various plenary and partial indulgences
Other Indulgences and Blessings
- Members of the Rosary Confraternity can receive a plenary indulgence, under the usual conditions:
- On the day of enrollment. (they send a certificate of membership indicating the day of the enrollment)
- On the following feast days: Christmas, Easter, Annunciation, Purification, Assumption, Our Lady of the Rosary, and Immaculate Conception
- On the day of enrollment. (they send a certificate of membership indicating the day of the enrollment)
- For those who pray the Rosary, a plenary indulgence is granted under the usual conditions, when the Rosary is prayed in Church, or in a Public Oratory, in a family (family Rosary), Religious Community, or Pious Association. Otherwise a partial indulgence is granted
- A partial indulgence is granted to those who use a Rosary blessed by a priest, even if five decades are not recited. The indulgence is plenary on the feast of Sts. Peter and Paul, if the blessing was performed by the pope or a bishop.

Membership
Enrolling in the Confraternity of the Rosary is pretty accessible. You don’t necessarily need to go a specific church or monastery to enroll (although it’s a certainly meaningful experience, if it’s possible for you).
For my enrollment process, I contacted the Rosary Center and Confraternity. This is the Western Province but I suspect you can enroll through other provinces as well. They have an online application or it can be completed through the mail. The member commits to strive to pray the entire Rosary each week but is not an obligation under the pain of sin if not completed. I will say that since joining, I’ve had the wherewithal to pray a complete set of mysteries most every day (I have missed a few days here and there though). They will send you information on when your enrollment date is well in advance so you can prepare to complete the requirements for the plenary indulgence, if you so choose.
I would encourage everyone to join but it’s also important to devote a certain level of discernment prior to doing so. If a full Rosary a week is not something you can realistically commit to, then that’s fine. It’s something that you can strive to work up to. For me, it’s been a great source of comfort that there are so many others out there praying the Rosary with me and for me and I for them.
Conclusion
I will say that I believe joining the Confraternity of the Rosary is a powerful way to deepen one’s devotion to the Virgin Mary and the Holy Rosary. By committing to pray the Rosary regularly and being united in prayer with other members of the Confraternity, individuals can experience a greater sense of spiritual community and grow in their love for God and the Catholic faith. The Rosary has been a treasured prayer for centuries and is a powerful tool for seeking the intercession of Mary and meditating on the mysteries of Christ’s life. Joining the Confraternity of the Rosary is a beautiful way to incorporate this prayer into one’s daily life and to join with others in promoting this devotion. Even if you are not in a spot to join, please pray the Rosary! One decade a day is an easily attainable goal. Before long, you will likely find yourself praying an entire mystery.
“The rosary is a long chain that links Heaven and earth. One end of it is in our hands and the other end is in the hands of the Holy Virgin…the Rosary prayer rises like incense to the feet of the Almighty.” St. Therese of Lisieux
